What would happen: the conditional

The conditional says what would happen. Like the future, it takes the whole infinitive, then adds one set of endings for every verb: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían. Viajaría (I would travel), comprarías (you would buy), viviríamos (we would live). Verbs with an irregular future keep that stem: tendría, haría, podría, querría, diría, vendría, pondría, saldría, sabría.

  • Tendríamos un barco. We would have a boat.
  • Sería perfecto. It would be perfect.

Asking nicely: me gustaría, ¿podría…?

The conditional softens what you say. Me gustaría (I would like) is the polite cousin of me gusta, and me encantaría means I would love to. ¿Podría…? (could you…?) makes a polite request, and querría is a gentler quiero.

  • Me gustaría un café.I would like a coffee.
  • Me encantaría viajar.I would love to travel.
