Wanting someone else to: quiero que + subjunctive

When you want someone else to do something, the second verb goes into the present subjunctive. Take the yo form of the present, drop the -o and swap the vowel: -ar verbs take e endings, -er and -ir verbs take a endings. Hablo → que hables, tengo → que tengas, hago → que haga. A few are irregular: sea (ser), esté (estar), vaya (ir), dé (dar), sepa (saber). Same person doing both? Use the infinitive: quiero viajar. Someone else? Que + subjunctive: quiero que viajes.

  • Quiero que seas feliz.I want you to be happy.
  • Quiero viajar.I want to travel.

Hopes: espero que, ojalá

Espero que (I hope that) and ojalá (let’s hope) are followed by the subjunctive: espero que tengas suerte, ojalá haga sol mañana. Ojalá can stand alone: ¡ojalá! (I hope so!). Desear works the same way: te deseo que seas muy feliz.

  • Espero que puedas venir.I hope you can come.
  • ¡Ojalá!I hope so!
