Don't!: no hables, no comas

To tell someone not to do something, use no + the present subjunctive you met at level 46: no hables (don’t speak), no comas (don’t eat), no vengas (don’t come). It works for everyone: no hable (usted), no hablemos (let’s not), no hablen (ustedes), no habléis (vosotros). In Argentina, vos uses the tú form: no hables.

  • No me mientas.Don't lie to me.
  • No vayas.Don't go.

No lo hagas: pronouns before the verb

In a positive command the pronouns join the end of the verb: hazlo, dímelo. In a negative command they come before it, as separate words: no lo hagas (don’t do it), no me lo digas (don’t tell me), no te preocupes (don’t worry).

  • No lo hagas.Don't do it.
  • No te preocupes.Don't worry.
