Having to: tengo que trabajar

Tener que plus a verb means 'to have to': Tengo que leer (I have to read), ¿Tienes que salir? (Do you have to go out?). Only tener changes; the second verb stays as it is.

  • Tengo que escribir.I have to write.
  • Tengo que leer el libro.I have to read the book.

The personal a: veo a mi madre

When the object of a verb is a person, Spanish puts a in front of it: Veo a mi madre (I see my mother), Escucho a mi padre. With things there is no a: Veo la casa. It has no English translation; it just marks a person.

  • Escucho a mi padre.I listen to my father.
  • Veo la casa.I see the house.
