Telling the time: es la una, son las dos

Ask ¿Qué hora es? (what time is it?). One o'clock is singular: Es la una. Every other hour is plural: Son las dos, son las diez. Add minutes with y: son las tres y cinco; y media is half past, y cuarto quarter past, and menos cuarto quarter to. To say when something happens, use a las: a las ocho (at eight), a la una (at one).

  • Es la una.It's one o'clock.
  • Son las dos.It's two o'clock.

Days of the week: el lunes, los lunes

Days are written with a small letter and are masculine. To say 'on Monday', just use el: el lunes trabajo (on Monday I work), with no word for 'on'. For every Monday, make it plural: los lunes trabajo (I work on Mondays). Lunes to viernes are the same in the plural; sábado and domingo add -s.

  • El lunes trabajo.On Monday I work.
  • Trabajo los lunes.I work on Mondays.
