What you have done: he comprado

The present perfect says what you have done, in a time that isn't over yet (today, this week, ever). It's haber plus the past participle: he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han + comprado. The participle ends in -ado for -ar verbs and -ido for -er and -ir verbs, and never changes: he comprado, hemos comprado. In Spain it's used a lot for today: Hoy he trabajado mucho. In Latin America the preterite is often used instead: Hoy trabajé mucho.

  • He estudiado mucho.I have studied a lot.
  • Hemos terminado el trabajo. We have finished the work.

Already and not yet: ya, todavía no

Ya (already) and todavía no (not yet) go naturally with the present perfect: Ya he limpiado la casa (I've already cleaned the house), Todavía no he terminado (I haven't finished yet). In questions, ya means 'yet': ¿Ya has terminado? (Have you finished yet?)

  • Todavía no he terminado.I haven't finished yet.
  • ¿Ya has lavado los platos?Have you already washed the dishes?
