Irregular participles: hecho, visto, escrito

A handful of common verbs have their own participle instead of -ado or -ido: hacer → hecho, decir → dicho, ver → visto, escribir → escrito, poner → puesto, abrir → abierto, volver → vuelto, romper → roto. ¿Qué has hecho? (What have you done?) No he visto esa película. Verbs like leer and traer keep -ido but take an accent: leído, traído.

  • He escrito una carta.I have written a letter.
  • Ha roto el teléfono. He has broken the phone.

Ever and never: alguna vez, nunca

To ask about experiences, use the present perfect with alguna vez (ever): ¿Has estado alguna vez aquí? (Have you ever been here?) The answer often uses nunca (never): Nunca he visto la nieve, or No he visto nunca la nieve. Like other negatives, nunca and nadie can go before the verb, or after it with no.

  • ¿Has estado aquí alguna vez?Have you ever been here?
  • Nunca he ido a la playa.I've never been to the beach.
