Setting the scene: estaba ... cuando sonó

In a story, the imperfect is the background: what was going on (Estaba en casa, Dormía, Llovía). The preterite is the event that happens in it: Estaba en casa cuando sonó el teléfono (I was at home when the phone rang). If you can say 'was ...-ing', it's usually the imperfect.

  • Llovía cuando salí.It was raining when I went out.
  • Estaba en casa cuando ocurrió el accidente.I was at home when the accident happened.

Mientras and de repente

Two words that signal which past to use. Mientras (while) usually goes with the imperfect: Mientras yo cocinaba, mi hijo dormía. De repente (suddenly) brings in an event, so the preterite: De repente sonó el teléfono.

  • De repente sonó el teléfono.Suddenly the phone rang.
  • Dormía cuando llamaste.I was sleeping when you called.
