Por or para?

Both can mean 'for'. Para looks ahead: a purpose (Estudio para aprender), a recipient (Es para ti), a destination or a deadline. Por looks at the cause or the route: through or along (Caminamos por la calle), because of or in exchange for (Gracias por todo), and by means of (por teléfono).

  • El tren pasa por la ciudad. The train goes through the city.

Directions: giras a la derecha

Spanish speakers often give directions in the plain present: Sigues todo recto, giras a la izquierda y cruzas la calle (you go straight on, turn left and cross the street). A la derecha and a la izquierda mean on or to the right and left.

  • Cruzas la calle. You cross the street.
  • El banco está a la izquierda. The bank is on the left.
