What will happen: the future

The future takes the whole infinitive and adds one set of endings, the same for -ar, -er and -ir verbs: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án. Hablaré (I will speak), comerás (you will eat), vivirá (she will live), viajaremos (we will travel). Every ending but -emos carries an accent.

  • Viajaremos en verano. We will travel in summer.
  • Vivirán en la ciudad. They will live in the city.

Voy a or iré? Plans and predictions

Both talk about the future. Ir a + infinitive is the everyday choice for plans: Voy a desayunar (I'm going to have breakfast). The future sounds a little more certain or formal, and is common for predictions and promises: Seguramente llegaré tarde (I'll most likely be late), Algún día viviré cerca del mar.

  • Voy a desayunar.I'm going to have breakfast.
  • Desayunaré a las ocho.I will have breakfast at eight.
