Short futures: tendré, haré, diré

A few common verbs change their stem in the future, then take the usual endings (-é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án). Three patterns. The vowel of the ending becomes a d: tener → tendré, poner → pondré, salir → saldré, venir → vendré. The e simply drops out: poder → podré, saber → sabré, querer → querré. And two are cut right down: hacer → haré, decir → diré. So: Mañana tendré más tiempo (tomorrow I'll have more time), ¿Qué harás? (what will you do?).

  • Te diré la verdad.I will tell you the truth.
  • Podremos ir.We will be able to go.

Promises: te prometo que...

Prometer que + the future makes a promise: Te prometo que vendré (I promise you I'll come). Or put an infinitive straight after it: Prometo llamar mañana (I promise to call tomorrow).

  • Te prometo que vendré.I promise you that I will come.
  • Él elegirá el anillo. He will choose the ring.
