The imperfect subjunctive: tuviera, fuera, pudiera

Take the ellos form of the preterite, drop -ron and add -ra, -ras, -ra, -ramos, -rais, -ran: hablaron → hablara, tuvieron → tuviera, fueron → fuera (for both ser and ir), pudieron → pudiera. Nosotros takes an accent: tuviéramos. There’s a second set ending in -se (tuviese), just as correct; the app accepts both. You need it after a past or conditional verb (quería que vinieras) and for things that aren’t real (si fuera rico…).

  • Si fuera rico, compraría una casa.If I were rich, I'd buy a house.
  • Si pudiera, ayudaría.If I could, I'd help.

If things were different: si tuviera…, haría…

For something that isn’t real now, si + imperfect subjunctive, then the conditional: si tuviera tiempo, aprendería a bailar (if I had time, I’d learn to dance). Compare a real possibility: si tengo tiempo, aprenderé.

  • Si tuviera tiempo, aprendería a bailar. If I had time, I'd learn to dance.
  • Si heredara una fortuna, la invertiría.If I inherited a fortune, I'd invest it.
