Happening right now: estoy comiendo

To say what's happening at this moment, use estar with the -ando or -iendo form: Estoy comiendo (I'm eating), ¿Qué estás haciendo? -ar verbs take -ando (hablando, cocinando); -er and -ir verbs take -iendo (comiendo, viviendo). A few change: leer gives leyendo, dormir gives durmiendo. Spanish uses this less than English: for plans and habits, the plain present is enough.

  • ¿Qué estás haciendo?What are you doing?
  • Estamos cocinando.We're cooking.

In the morning: por la mañana

Mañana means tomorrow, but la mañana is the morning. To say when you do something, use por: por la mañana (in the morning), por la tarde, por la noche. With a clock time it's de: a las ocho de la mañana, a las diez de la noche.

  • Trabajo por la mañana.I work in the morning.
  • a las ocho de la mañanaat eight in the morning
