Polite commands, and let's: firme, cierren, comamos

For usted, ustedes and nosotros (let's), take the yo form of the present, drop the -o and switch vowels: -ar verbs take e, and -er and -ir verbs take a. Firmo → firme (sign), espero → espere (wait), cierro → cierren (close, all of you), como → comamos (let's eat).

  • Espere aquí, por favor.Wait here, please. (usted)
  • ¡Comamos!Let's eat!

Eight short ones: di, haz, ve, pon, sal, sé, ten, ven

Eight common verbs have a short tú command. Decir: di. Hacer: haz. Ir: ve. Poner: pon. Salir: sal. Ser: sé. Tener: ten. Venir: ven. Ven aquí (come here), Di la verdad (tell the truth), Ve a la farmacia (go to the pharmacy). Their usted forms follow the yo form as usual: digo → diga, tengo → tenga, vengo → venga.

  • Haz la tarea.Do your homework.
  • Ve a la farmacia.Go to the pharmacy.

It hurts: me duele, me duelen

Doler works like gustar: what hurts is the subject. Me duele la cabeza (my head hurts), Me duelen las piernas (my legs hurt). Spanish uses the, not my, for parts of the body: me duele el estómago.

  • Me duele la cabeza. My head hurts.
  • ¿Te duele el estómago?Does your stomach hurt?
