Two pronouns: te lo doy, me la prestas

When there are two pronouns, the person comes first and the thing second, both before the verb: Te lo doy (I give it to you), ¿Me la prestas? (will you lend it to me?), Me lo devolvió (he gave it back to me). Lo and la match the thing: el libro → lo, la cámara → la.

  • Te lo doy.I give it to you.
  • Me lo devolvió.He gave it back to me.

Le becomes se: se lo di

Le and les can't sit next to lo or la: they turn into se. Le doy el libro → Se lo doy (I give it to him). Les explico la idea → Se la explico (I explain it to them). Se on its own doesn't say who, so add a él, a ella or a ellos if it isn't clear.

  • Se lo di.I gave it to him.
  • Se lo diremos. We will tell her.
